I maintain that every civil rights bill in this country was passed for white people, not for black people. For example, I am black. I know that. I also know that while I am black I am a human being. Therefore I have the right to go into any public place. White people don’t know that. Every time I tried to go into a public place they stopped me. So some boys had to write a bill to tell that white man, “He’s a human being; don’t stop him.” That bill was for the white man, not for me. I knew I could vote all the time and that it wasn’t a privilege but my right. Every time I tried I was shot, killed or jailed, beaten or economically deprived. So somebody had to write a bill to tell white people, “When a black man comes to vote, don’t bother him.” That bill was for white people.

If you call yourself “body positive”, it is imperative that you do NOT:
- make fun of fat bodies
- make fun of thin bodies
- make fun of muscular bodies
- make fun of bodies without a lot of muscle
- make fun of breasts or nipples
- make fun of penis length or girth or shape…

White privilege is feeling entitled to redefine anti-oppression political movements (anarchism, socialism, etc.) in terms of whiteness. If you deny white privilege and white supremacy, you are helping to uphold those systems, and therefore, you are not a “radical leftist,” but an active agent in the greatest system of oppression of them all.

Being anti femme does not make you radical, it means you’re controlling women just like the rest of society.
Also: it is surprisingly easy to hate a culture that sets an expectation that women (and only women) will wear high heels or makeup or have cosmetic surgery while accepting that there will always be people (mostly women) who genuinely choose to do those things. It’s the expectation, not the action, that’s repugnant.

As a footnote, I need to say that it has been pointed out that cataloging racism is a sight below the standards of this blog. I sort of agree. But over the course of the Obama presidency I have become convinced that no single force exerts a greater pull on his presidency than white racism. Not white resentment. Not white populism. White racism. I don’t know how else to explain a health care denounced as reparations, the rather continuous disrespect, the sense that he is a Kenyan illegitimate or all of the attendant theories. I do not know how else to explain a state like West Virginia, arguably the most racist in the country, where delegates are now refusing to endorse the president.
There will be more on this in the coming months. I don’t want to scoop myself. But my point is I can only stop talking about racism, when it ceases to be a significant force in our politics. When the mere act of being white gives Obama’s opponent “a home-state advantage nationally,” I can’t stop. It would be deeply wrong to stop.Ta-Nehisi Coates, in a blog entry for The Atlantic about right-wing radio host Barbara Espinosa recently saying of Barack Obama, “I call him a monkey. I am also in no way obligated to say yes to anything. And if I said ‘No I don’t really want to go for a walk’ you could go for a walk yourself or maybe I would want to go for a walk later or maybe we could just do something else. And that would be fine. And unless I volunteered the reasoning behind it, then you don’t need to know why or you ask once I say I don’t want to talk about it you let it go. It’s literally one of the EASIEST things.
Claiming otherwise is a trademark of rape culture. Pushing for a reason when the other person is not comfortable giving one, has none in particular, or has said they don’t want to share is a trademark of rape culture. Feeling you are entitled to either the action itself or a reason behind a no is a trademark of rape culture.
